What top-ranking local businesses have in common

Ongoing research comparing businesses near the top of Google with those lower down to see which useful patterns keep appearing.

What I wanted to find out

Google advice is often reduced to one generic checklist. The more useful question is what the better-ranking businesses in a real trade and area tend to have in common—and which apparent signals make little practical difference.

What I checked

  • Compare businesses near the top of Google with those appearing further down.
  • Check search terms, services, categories, reviews, hours, websites, areas covered and how complete each profile is.
  • Use the patterns that keep appearing as practical targets, while being honest that a common pattern does not prove what caused a ranking.

How this helps a client

The findings help decide what to check first, which changes are worth recommending and what to watch each month. The detailed figures are used for each client rather than turned into vague public promises.
